Abstract
841,365. Printed paper; finishing. RESEARCH A. B. June 19, 1957, No. 19346/57. Class 100(2) A printed article such as pasteboard, printed with a steam-set ink, is coated with a layer having a lacquering action, said layer containing water to harden or dry the ink and itself being adapted to form a film on drying. The ink may comprise synthetic resins dissolved in glycols, and pigment. The coating layer may comprise artificial rubber products or plastics dispersed or emulsified in water, e.g. acryl nitrile polymers in a 35% water emulsion, and may be applied by a roller immediately after printing. The emulsion is then dried by an infra-red lamp and a further layer comprising a 50% water dispersion of a co-polymer of a polyacryl acid ester applied by a further roller. The material is then passed through a drier. Suitable dispersions for the layer to be applied to the ink are based on acryl-nitrilderivatives, or derivatives of styrene, polyacrylic acid or polyvinyl. Thickeners may be added, e.g. dispersions of paraffin waxes or microcrystalline waxes.
