Abstract

732,421. Transferring designs. WOOLDRIK, G. J. L. July 15, 1953, No. 19636/53. Class 100 (2). Designs are transferred to fabrics, such as cotton cloth, or painter's canvas treated or not with linseed oil, by first applying thereto a solution or an emulsion of a polyvinyl, polyacryl or other synthetic resin susceptible to swelling by oil (so that the ink of the transfer will be bound thereto by penetration) in a small proportion, e.g. not exceeding 20 gms. per sq. m., so that the structure and appearance of the fabric remain substantially unaltered, and then applying by the decalcomania method a transfer printed on paper by a fatty printing ink. In an example a cotton fabric of weight 290 gms. per sq. m. is coated by a doctor blade with polyacrylonitrile in aqueous dispersion to contain, when dry, 10 gms. per sq. m. of the resin ; after a light rubbing with a fat talcum to prevent adherence of the transfer paper, a multicolour transfer is applied, e.g. in a heated calender giving a temperature of 50-180‹ C. and a pressure of 3-10 atmospheres ; the backing paper is then removed, e.g. by wetting. The fabric may then be washed, slowly dried, stretched on frames, and varnished. It is stated that two or more successive prints may in some cases be obtained from a single transfer paper.
