Abstract

Materials composed of hydrophobic fibres e.g. acetate, nylon, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, polyolefin or mixtures thereof are resist printed by a process which comprises applying to the material (1) a disperse dye which contains in each molecule at least two radicals with unshared pairs of electrons and which are capable of forming a metal complex and (2) a metal compound capable of forming a chelate compound with the disperse dye, the disperse dye being applied to the whole surface of the material and the metal compound either being applied to the material in areas where dyeing is not desired or being applied over the whole surface of the material from acid medium which inactivates the chelate forming properties of the metal compound and an alkaline resist being printed in the material in areas where dyeing by the disperse dyestuff is not required and the material is then heated so as to form the complex where dyeing is not required and to fix the dyeing in the other areas. The disperse dye is applied by any standard method, the heat treatment may be by dry heat or steaming. Coloured resist prints are obtainable by incorporating a dyestuff in the resist print paste e.g. vat, disperse, direct and azoic dyes. The alkaline resist print may be applied first followed by treatment with the disperse dye-acid-metal salt liquid. Complex formation in alkali is at pH value of 5 or above.
