Abstract

Aromatic polyester textile materials are dyed or printed by applying a metallizable dyestuff and treating them, before or after the application of the dyestuff, with a co-ordination compound of a metal such as copper, chromium, nickel or cobalt. Suitable co-ordination compounds are complex copper derivatives of ethylene diamine, aminoacetic acid, b - aminopropionic acid or N - nitrosophenylhydroxylamine, which are preferably applied in the presence of a swelling agent for the fibre, and chelate compounds of the following formula, which may be applied in the absence of a swelling agent. <FORM:0777377/IV(b)/1> wherein M is a metal atom and X is <FORM:0777377/IV(b)/2> or <FORM:0777377/IV(b)/3> Examples of compounds of the above formula are the copper complexes of acetylacetone, benzoylacetone, propionylacetone, 1:1:1 - trifluoropentane - 2:4 - dione, furoylacetone, N:N1 - bis - (1 - methyl - 3 - ketobutylidene) - ethylene diamine, salicylaldoxime, 2 - hydroxy-acetzophenoneoxime, methylsalicylaldoxime, 5 - chlorosalicylaldoxime, 2 - hydroxy-benzophenoneoxime, 2:4 - dihydroxyacetophenoneoxime, 2:4 - dihydroxybenzaldoxime, 2 - hydroxypropiophenoneoxime, 3 - methoxysalicylaldoxime, 2 - hydroxybenzald - O - methyloxime, 8 - hydroxyquinoline and 4 - hydroxybenzthiazole. The co-ordination compounds are preferably applied in aqueous solution or dispersion at elevated temperature and, if desired, under pressure, the solution or dispersion containing, when necessary, surface active agents, swelling agents and carriers. Suitable metallizable dyestuffs, which are preferably applied in dispersed form in aqueous dyebaths containing, if desired, surface active agents, swelling agents and carriers, are metallizable azo, anthraquinonoid and indigoid dyestuffs. Numerous types and long lists of suitable azo dyestuffs are given. After the application of the dyestuff, and before or after the application of the co-ordination compound, the textile may be treated with a reducing agent, e.g. sodium hydrosulphite, and when this treatment follows the application of the co-ordination compound it is advantageous to treat subsequently with warm aqueous hydrochloric acid.
