Abstract

Dyeings of anionic dyestuffs on polyacrylonitrile textile fibres are rendered fast to washing by after-treating with a neutral to acid aqueous solution of a natural or synthetic tanning agent at an elevated temperature. The tanning agent may be added to the dyebath at the completion of dyeing or may be applied as a separate step. The solution of the tanning agent may be acidified with mineral acids, mineral acid salts or organic acids and is preferably heated to 70-120 DEG C. Specified tanning agents are sumac extract, tannic acid, a sulphonated sulphurized phenol, the ammonium salt of sulphonated polystyrene and various thiophenol derivatives as described, for example in Specifications 173,313, 211,108, 365,534, 374,928, 375,885 and 382,333. When a tanning agent which is free from metals having complex - forming properties is employed, improved results are obtained by subsequently applying, at an elevated temperature, an aqueous solution of a salt of a metal having complexforming properties, such as chromium fluoride, cobalt acetate, nickel chloride, aluminium sulphate, copper sulphate, stannous chloride and tartar emetic.
