Abstract

Wool and other nitrogenous materials are dyed by impregnating the fibres with an aqueous medium containing a wool dyestuff, a cationic surfactant and an anionic surfactant and subjecting the impregnated fibres to a heat treatment. The nitrogenous materials may be silk, regenerated protein, synthetic polyamides and blends with other fibres as well as fur and leather. The dyes may be acid, chroming, metal (Cr or Co) complex, metal phthalocyanine dyes which may contain -SO3H groups and reactive dyes. When dyeing blends other dyes may be coemployed. The cationic surfactants may be quaternary ammonium bromides or pyridinium compounds and the anionic surfactants may be a salt, e.g. Na salt, of a sulphonated fatty acid, e.g. oleic acid, or of a naphthalene or alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acid. The aqueous medium may also contain a thickener, an acid or acid salt, and an organic solvent that is soluble or sparingly soluble in water. In the examples wool slubbing is padded with the aqueous liquor and steamed without intermediate drying.
