Abstract

536,104. Artificial filaments, films 8:c.; albumens ; dyeing textiles &c. SANDOZ, Ltd. Nov. 7, 1939, No. 29562. Convention date, Jan. 27. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Artificial fibres having a basis of a protein such as casein or keratin are subjected to treatment with compounds of trivalent chromium at temperatures above 50‹C. for the purpose of increasing their resistance to physical and chemical agents without impairing their tinctorial properties. The treatment increases the resistance of the protein materials to the action of boiling water and aqueous solutions of acids. The treated materials may be dyed with direct and sulphur dyes, and also with acid and mordant dyes which require boiling dye baths, or the presence of acid for fixing. The dyeings are resistant to the action of soap and soda treatments at 60‹C. The treated fibres are resistant to the fulling action of aqueous liquids. They show increased resistance to wearing and mechanical stress and they have increased tensile strength and elasticity. The chromium compounds may be used in presence of acids or salts. Chromium fluoride, chloride, sulphate, formate, acetate, chrome alum, sodium chrome oxalate, or other simple, double, or complex salt of trivalent chromium may be used. A basic salt may be used. The artificial protein fibres may be treated in loose form or as slivers, or skeins, or in the form of fabrics alone or mixed with other fibres. Treatment is in general carried out in an aqueous medium. Subsequently to the treatment with the chromium compound the materials may be treated with acid-binding agents such as solutions of soda, or ammonia. The chromium treatment may be carried out in the course of the manufacture of the artificial fibres or other products. The chromium treatment may be combined with the dyeing, e.g. " Lanital " (Registered Trade Mark) may be dyed with a mordant dyestuff in presence of a trivalent chromium. salt, present in excess of the amount required for the formation of the chromium lake of the dyestuff. In an example, " Lanital " is treated with a hot solution of chrome alum, and then after adding Glauber salt to the bath, there is added a mordant dyestuff and an acid. When the dyeing is completed, potassium chromate is added to the bath and chroming effected with boiling. In another example, the fibres are treated with chromium acetate solution containing coconut-oil fatty acid polyglyceride. In another example, the fibres are treated with a boiling solution of complex sodium chromium oxalate and then dyed with Indochromin 2R in presence of a chrome mordant and an acid, or the fibres are treated with a boiling solution containing sodium chromium oxalate, Indochromin 2R, and acetic or formic acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of films, plates, and synthetic masses having a basis of protein or the like. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
