Abstract

Textile materials are coloured with a colour capable of being developed under neutral or acid conditions by the use of a padding or printing colour which contains as coupling component a 4-arylazo-1-amino-7-oxynaphthalene free from groups imparting solubility in water and a stabilized diazo-compound of the formula:- <FORM:0863216/IV(c)/1> in which R represents an at most bicyclic aryl residue free from groups imparting solubility in water and X represents a hydrocarbon radical which may contain groups imparting solubility in water. Preferred diazo compounds are those in which X represents an alkyl group, which may have a branched chain, and R represents a benzene residue which contains at least one substituent not imparting solubility in water. Preferred coupling components are 4-arylazo-1-amino-7-oxynaphthalenes of the formula:- <FORM:0863216/IV(c)/2> in which R1 represents an at most bicyclic aryl residue, more especially a naphthalene residue which may be substituted, or preferably a benzene residue which contains at least one substituent not imparting solubility in water. The coloured material may be treated with bichromate after the printing or padding operation, preferably in an acetic acid bath before the coloured material is dried and steamed or subjected to dry heat treatment at temperatures above 100 DEG C. For printing, a printing paste is preferably used, and for padding, a solution obtained by replacing by water 70-100% of the thickening agent used in the printing paste. Examples of the colouring of cotton fabrics are given, and many dyestuff components are specified. Specifications 785,613 and 829,570 are referred to.
