Abstract
2 - Hydroxy - 5 - methyl - 11:21:31:41:51:61 -hexahydrobenzophenone (see Example (1)) is prepared by condensing hexahydrobenzoylchloride with p-cresol methylether in the presence of aluminium chloride and then heating the product so obtained with aluminium chloride. The oxime of the above compound is prepared by reaction with hydroxylamine in ethanol solution.ALSO:Aromatic polyester textile materials are dyed or printed by applying one or more copperable dyestuffs and then treating with an aqueous medium containing a copper salt and a coordination compound of copper with an oxime of the formula <FORM:0799742/IV (b)/1> wherein R=hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl. The aryl nucleus of the oxime or the aryl ring of the substituent R may carry nuclear substituents such as alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxyl groups or halogen atoms. Suitable copper salts are copper sulphate, nitrate, chloride, acetate and tartrate. Suitable coordination compounds are copper derivatives of salicylaldoxime or its nuclear substituted derivatives such as 5-methyl-, 5-chloro-, 3-methoxy-, 3:5-dimethyl- and 4-hydroxy-salicylaldoxime, and copper derivatives of 2-hydroxy aromatic ketoximes such as 2-hydroxyacetophenoneoxime, 2-hydroxy-propiophenoneoxime, 2 - hydroxy - benzophenoneoxime, 2-hydroxy - 5 - methyldesoxybenzoinoxime, 2-hydroxy - 5 - methyl <FORM:0799742/IV (b)/2> 2:4-dihydroxyacetophenoneoxime and 2:4-dihydroxypropiophenoneoxime. Suitable dyestuffs, many examples of which are given, are of the azo, anthraquinonoid and indigoid series and the dyestuffs are employed as aqueous dispersions containing a surface-active agent such as oleyl-p-anisidine sulphonate. Dyeing may be effected at temperatures up to 100 DEG C., or at temperatures above 100 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure. The dyebath may contain swelling agents such as diphenyl, o-hydroxy-diphenyl or p-hydroxydiphenyl. Treatment with the aqueous medium containing the copper salt and co-ordination complex may be effected at about 100 DEG C., or above 100 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure, and the aqueous medium is preferably neutral or slightly acidic and may contain swelling agents and surface-active agents. Fastness of the coppered dyeings may be improved and surplus dyestuff removed from the fibre-surface by treatment with a strong reducing agent, e.g. sodium hydrosulphite. Numerous examples are given.
