Abstract

551,440. Coated fabrics ; ornamenting. SYLVANIA INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION. July 17, 1941, No. 9069. Convention date, July 19, 1940. [Class 140] [Also in Group XV] Articles such as maps, photographs, advertisements and book-covers are provided with smooth glossy surface coatings by applying a solution of a thermoplastic material in a volatile solvent to a backing sheet having a smooth non- porous cellulose hydrate surface, evaporating the solvent to form a film, applying the sheet to the article, applying heat and pressure to cause adherenc and stripping the backing sheet from the film. The thermoplastic material may be polyvinyl chloride or acetate, polystyrene polyacrylic acid esters, polyisobutylene, copolymers of vinyl esters and halides, e.g. vinyl acetate and chloride, of vinyl derivatives and acrylic nitriles or of vinyl derivatives and styrene derivatives; cellulose stearate palmitate or acetobutyrate or ethyl cellulose sulphonamide-alde'hyde resins; rubber hydrohalides; sulphur-olefine resins; coumarone and indene resins; dibasic acid-diamine condensation products; chlorinated diphenyl; natural and synthetic gums. The backing sheet may be wholly of cellulose hydrate, of cellulose ester or ether superficially treated to form cellulose hydrate or may be paper, fabric, felt or leather coated with cellulose hydrate. The thermoplastic material may contain plasticizers, pigments, fillers, dyestuffs, waxes or oils. The heat and pressure may be applied by heated platen plates, heated calender rolls or steam presses. The articles may be embossed, on one or both surfaces, simultaneously with the application of the film by forming the pressure plates or rollers with raised or depressed portions.
