Abstract

546,469. Compound fabrics. WALLACH, R. Dec. 13, 1940, No. 17645. [Class 140] A compound fabric for use as a substitute for window glazing is produced by applying to a sheet of a hydrophilic colloid such as cellulose hydrate a solution comprising .a thermoplastic film-forming material such as a mixture of a polyvinyl acetate resin and a methyl methacrylate resin dissolved in a volatile organic solvent such as acetone, evaporating all of the solvent to form a continuous coating and then laminating the coated side of the sheet to a layer of fabric by means of heat and pressure by the use of heated platen plates, calender rolls, steam presses and the like. As the thermoplastic material may be employed vinyl resins, cumarone resin, indene resin, condensation products, and cellulose esters and ethers. A thermo- .plastic coated sheet of cellulose hydrate &c. may be applied to each side of the fabric and before applying the thermoplastic material to the cellulose hydrate &c. sheet the latter may be coated with a waterproof or moistureproof lacquer and the final product may be similarly coated. Other intermediate coatings may be employed to afford superior anchorage of the thermoplastic coating to the cellulose hydrate, suitable anchor coatings being described' in Specification 527,985 and in U.S.A. Specifications 1,962,338, 1.972,869, 1,990,080 and 2,030,962. Specification 433,011 also is referred to.
