Abstract

A leather-like hat body is formed of fibrous material containing at least 5%, preferably at least 20%, by weight of the fibres of composite fibres of the same kind as in the parent Specification by subjecting the material to at least one treatment to develop crimp and activate the potentially adhesive component, so producing an assembly strengthened by entanglement of the fibres and by adhesive bonding, and then compacting and setting it. Plasticizers, other auxiliaries and non-activatable fibres may be included as in the parent Specification. The fibres may be formed into a web, crimped and bonded by the same processes and agents as in the parent Specification. Compaction is preferably effected while the potentially adhesive component is still substantially adhesive. The body may be formed by air deposition of fibres on a mould or a fibrous web may, whilst the adhesive component is still tacky, be moulded under compacting pressure in a concave mould. A nap may be raised by buffing and brushing to give the appearance of suede. Softeners may be incorporated to improve the flexibility of the product, e.g. silicone compounds may be applied as a size to the fibres.ALSO:A leather - like material is formed from an assembly containing at least 5% by weight of the fibres of composite fibres of the same kind as in the parent specification. Plasticizers, other auxiliaries and non-activatable fibres may be included as in the parent specification. The fibres may be formed into a web, crimped and bonded by the same processes and agents as in the parent specification. Compaction of the web is preferably affected while the potentially adhesive component is still substantially-adhesive, e.g. immediately after the activation treatment. Alternatively a short interval may be allowed to elapse in which case the sheet material may be more compacted in the centre than at the surfaces. One such sheet was subsequently split to give two thin leather-like sheets (Example 8). Alternatively compaction may be effected after a longer interval of time if reheating is employed. Calendering rolls or flat pressure plates may be used and may be provided with suitably etched surfaces to provide an embossed effect on the product. One calender roll may be heated and one unheated to provide one glossy and one fibrous surface. A nap may be raised on the leather-like product by buffing and brushing and the leather-like materials may be moulded to provide shaped articles. Softeners may be incorporated to improve the flexibility of the product, e.g. silicone compounds may be applied as a size to the fibres.ALSO:A leather-like material is formed from an assembly containing at least 5% by weight of the fibres of composite fibres of the same kind as in the parent specification.
