[Class 93] [Also in Group VIII] A polish-like gloss is produced on metal surfaces by applying films of thermoplastic materials 'with the aid of heat and pressure, the metal being first coated wih a solution of a thermoplastic metal-adhering agent, such as an artificial resin varnish, and an intermediate layer provided between the coating and the film to produce adhesion thereof. This intermediate layer may be a sheet of wood, paper, or cardboard which may be, coloured or patterned ; alternatively, solutions of thermoplastic substances of similar composition to that of the film may be combined or mixed with the thermoplastic metal - adhering layer. Bronze. powder may be incorporated with such solutions, or a number of differently-coloured solutions may be used. The pressure is applied by polished metal surfaces which may be profiled to produce grain &c. effects. In an example, an artificial resin varnish is applied to an iron plate, an intermedate layer consisting of a mixture of nitro-cellulose and artificial resin varnishes is next applied, and a clear or printed film of cellulose acetate is pressed thereon using an hydraulic press and a temperature of 90‹C. In a modification, the mixed lacquer is applied direct to the plate; followed by a coating of wood veneer or printed paper and a colourless acetate film.
