Abstract

A process of making a decorative sheet material comprising positioning a plurality of decorative elements upon a first layer of thermoplastics sheet material, covering the decorative elements with a second layer of thermoplastics sheet material to form an assembly of layers and applying heat and pressure to the assembly. Further layers of decorative elements and thermoplastics sheet material may be incorporated. <IMAGE>

Description

Decorative Sheet Material This invention relates to new decorative sheet materials and processes of making them.
The manufacture of decorative sheet materials such as paper or plastics materials having a coloured pattern is generally carried out on costly equipment entailing the production of long runs of the required product. The method of manufacture often results in the coloured pattern having a flat appearance i.e. lacking a sense of depth. The present invention is directed to a process of making such materials utilising inexpensive equipment and resulting in decorative sheet materials having both very good aesthetic and mechanical properties.
Accordingly this invention provides a process of making a decorative sheet material comprising positioning a plurality of decorative elements upon a first layer of thermoplastics sheet material covering the decorative elements with a second layer of thermoplastics sheet material and applying to the assembly of layers both heat and pressure so as to bond the layers together.
This invention is illustrated but not restricted by the following drawings in which; Figure 1 is a view in vertical cross section of one preferred form of decorative sheet material made according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of an alternative form of the material.
Figures 3 a, b & c are views in plan showing the arrangement of decorative elements within a sheet material.
The material illustrated in Figure 1 is obtained by scattering decorative material (2) consisting of pieces of textile yarn and metal foil on to a thin sheet of adhesive (1) consisting of a thin tenuous web of spun bonded thermoplastics filaments made from polyvinyl chloride. The layer of material is then covered with a second sheet (3) of the same adhesive after which the assembly of layers is heated to about 150C in a press. During the process the adhesive layers fuse and bond the pieces of decorative material Sheets of other thermoplastics materials can be used in which case heating temperatures enabling fusion of the materials should be used. Furthermore the decorative elements, if fusible, should have fusion points above the fusion points of the thermoplastics sheet.Materials made from two layers of adhesive separated by a single layer of decorative elements are referred to below as base fabrics.
The decorative effects can be modified by making a multilayered sheet as shown in Figure 2 in which alternate layers of adhesive sheets (22) and decorative material (23) are plied together to form an assembly. The latter is then heated, as beforer in a press to bond the layers together.
The decorative material can be used in a random arrangement as shown in Figure 3a. However the material can also he used to good effect when it is in the form of continuous yarns or filaments which have been arranged in a regular pattern as shown in Figures 3b & 3c. One method for making especially attractive materials takes advantage of the fact that some sheets of adhesive are either transparent or semi-transparent. According to this method a design is first drawn on a sheet of paper. A sheet of adhesive having sufficient transparency to enable the design to be viewed through it, is then placed on the sheet of paper. Decorative material can then be selected and placed on specific parts of the adhesive sheet which display the part of the design for which the material has been chosen. The paper sheet bearing the design is then removed. The layer of decorative material is then covered with a second sheet of adhesive and the assembly heated under pressure.
If desired extra strength and rigidity can be conferred on to the decorative sheets by giving them an after-treatment with a transparent film forming resin for example a polyurethane.
The adhesive sheet materials which are used in the process can be in the form of continuous films or tenuous webs of fibres melting preferably at about 100-200c. When melted or softened by heat and pressure they should preferably form colourless films on the material to be used as decorative material. Materials which have been found to be very satisfactory include polymers and copolymers of vinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polyproplene and certain polyamides.
The decorative sheets can be used for a wide variety of purposes, for example light shades, blinds, table mats, room dividers and coverings for umbrellas. Small portions of the materials can also be incorporated with various forms of commemorative cards, for example Christmas cards and as decorative panels in dresses for ladies.
Commemorative cards can be made by made by spraying a sheet of thin cardboard with an adhesive sold under the trade name SPRAYMOUNT and then applying under pressure a layer of base fabric. The base fabric can also be used to good effect in the manufacture of wallcoverings. These can be made conveniently by treating either a base fabric or a layer of paper with an adhesive for example those sold under the trade marks SOLVITE, BEELINE and POLYCELL and bonding the layers together. The material can be reinforced by bonding with additional layers of plastics material for other applications e.g. the manufacture of handbags.
