Abstract

1,027,418. Ornamenting; etching. DIXON CORPORATION. March 23, 1964 [April 12, 1963], No. 12228/64. Headings B6G and B6J. A metal article, such as a cooking-utensil or flat-iron, is decorated by applying an ornamental polyacrafluorethylene layer to the metal base, applying thereover a sheet of P.T.F.E. not thicker than 0À025 inch, heating to 650-800‹ F., and cooling, whereby the said sheet becomes transparent. The ornamental layer may comprise P.T.F.E. mixed with pigment, applied as a dispersion in a fluid or in particulate form, over the entire base or selected parts thereof, or may comprise a layer of P.T.F.E. on top of which are applied ornamental materials such as cut-out pieces of foil, bronze flakes, aluminium particles, gold or silver dust, covering not more than 75% of the underlying layer. Several layers of differently coloured P.T.F.E. may be included, some being applied through stencils or by silk-screen printing. Examples of such ornamental layers are (a) P.T.F.E. together with water and 1-1À25% of an alkyl sulphate, e.g. sodium salt of the sulphuric acid ester of lauryl alcohol, (b) particulate P.T.F.E. together with sodium lauryl sulphate and chromic acid. The transparency of the P.T.F.E. sheet is improved by rapid cooling. Before application the metal may roughened. Etching.-A metal surface is roughened by etching with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, aqua regia, fuming sulphuric acid, chromic acid, sulphochromic acid, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide or barium hydroxide.
