Abstract
555,148. Coating surfaces; ornamenting. KLINT, J. A., (trading as KLINT. BERNHARDT & CO.), May 8, 1941, No. 5988. [Class 95] [Also in Group XV] Surfaces are coated by applying a liquid composition consisting of a mixture of an aqueous solution of a thermosetting resin with an aqueous emulsion of a drying oil modified alkyd resin, or a vinyl resin, allowing the coated surface to dry, and thereupon subjecting it to heat and pressure, e.g. by means of heated pressure plates, so as to harden the composition and render it insoluble in water and the ordinary organic solvents for resins. Alternatively, the coating composition is applied, and allowed to dry, on one side of a loose sheet of fibrous material, the other side of which is provided with a binder, preferably a thermosetting binder, and the sheet is then laid upon the surface to be coated, and the whole subjected to heat and pressure. Specified thermosetting resins are urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins, a specified alkyd resin is glycerol-phthalic acid resin, and a specified vinyl resin is polyvinyl chloride. Specified optional ingredients of the coating compositions are:-plasticizers such as castor oil modified glycerol-phthalic acid resins, fatty acid modified urea-formaldehyde resins, polystyrol, poly-isobutylene and poly-acrylic acid esters; emulsion stabilisers such as methyl cellulose and casein; pigments such as titanium white, ochre and cinnabar; and zinc stearate to prevent adhesion to the press plates.
