Abstract

A coating-composition, particularly for application to absorbent or porous surfaces, comprises an emulsion of varnish in water, or of water in varnish, wherein the varnish contains a drying oil and, in addition thereto, a phenolic synthetic resin which is soluble in a drying oil. Suitable synthetic resins are the condensation products from phenyl-phenols and methylene-containing agents as described in Specification 347,737, and the condensation products of a phenol, a drying oil, a methylene-containing agent and a non-phenolic resin, as described in Specification 293,453, [Class 95]. Additional ingredients which may be present include driers, solvents such as cellosolve, xylol, or petroleum solvents, gelatin, camphor, tannic acid, lamp black, lead acetate, starch, gum arabic, casein, soaps, Bentonite, ammonium linoleate and triethanolamine. When placed upon an absorbent material, the water of the coating composition is absorbed leaving the varnish constituent on the surface. The compositions may be applied by a brush, a roller, or a knife, according to their consistency, and may be used as inks.ALSO:A coating - composition, particularly for application to absorbent or porous surfaces, comprises an emulsion of varnish in water, or of water in varnish, wherein the varnish contains a drying oil and, in addition thereto, a phenolic synthetic resin which is soluble in a drying oil. Suitable synthetic resins are the condensation products from phenyl-phenols and methylene-containing agents as described in Specification 347,737, [Group III], and the condensation products of a phenol, a drying oil, a methylene-containing agent and a non-phenolic resin, as described in Specification 293,453, [Class 95]. Additional ingredients which may be present include driers, solvents such as cellosolve xylol or petroleum solvents, gelatin, camphor, tannic acid, lamp black, lead acetate, starch, gum arabic, casein, soaps, Bentonite, ammonium linoleate and triethanolamine. When placed upon an absorbent material, the water of the coating composition is absorbed, leaving the varnish constituent on the surface. The compositions may be applied by a brush, a roller, or a knife, according to their consistency, and may be used as inks.
