Abstract

A surface coating comprises a silicate underlayer covered with a layer consisting wholly of, or containing a preponderating proportion of, a synthetic resin or resins unaffected by the silicate underlayer. Suitable synthetic resins are polymerization products of vinyl acetate or of acrylic esters, or mixtures of these, and smaller quantities of natural or of other synthetic resins may be added. A vegetable oil may be present in either coating to improve adhesion between the two coatings. A final coating of oil paint, varnish or enamel may be applied. According to an example, a surface is coated with a pigmented solution of sodium silicate and, after drying, there is applied a 20 per cent solution of an acrylic ester resin in xylol, to which has been added 5 per cent of tung oil and 7--10 per cent of another resin, e.g. a phenol-formaldehyde resin or an alkyd resin.ALSO:A surface coating comprises a silicate underlayer covered with a layer consisting wholly of, or containing a preponderating proportion of, a synthetic resin or resins unaffected by the silicate underlayer.
