Abstract

An object camouflaged by coating it with one or more compositions which are made up and applied so that not only visual and panchromatic, but also infra-red rays are reflected in like manner by the coated object as by its surroundings. According to one method, the object is coated with an under film containing pigment having the necessary infra-red reflecting characteristics, and then with a top film containing pigment having the necessary visual and panchromatic reflecting characteristics, but which is also sufficiently infra-red transparent. The base coating may contain white or yellow pigments, and specified pigments suitable for use in the outer or surface coating are ultramarine blue, chromium hydroxide, chlorophyll, monastral blue and phosphotungstic green. Alternatively, a single coating composition may be used, containing an infra-red reflecting pigment of high specific gravity, and an infra-red transparent pigment of low specific gravity, in a vehicle which is such that the heavier pigment is largely able to settle to the bottom of the coating before the latter dries. Suitable base coatings comprise: (1) lead chromate, barytes, whiting, asbestine, litharge, enamel oil, linseed oil, varsol, driers, and a phenol formaldehyde resin varnish; (2) diatomaceous earth, yellow iron oxide, lead chromate, and a phenolformaldehyde resin varnish. Suitable surface or top coatings comprise: (3) ultramarine blue, diatomaceous earth, aluminium stearate, enamel oil, linseed oil, varsol, driers, and a phenolformaldehyde resin varnish; (4) chromium hydroxide, diatomaceous earth, aluminium stearate, enamel oil, linseed oil, varsol, driers and a phenol formaldehyde resin varnish. A single coating composition may be made by mixing paints (1) and (3) above. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 563,993, [Group III].
