Abstract

An insecticidal composition comprises a film-forming vehicle and benzene hexachloride containing a significant proportion of g -benzene hexachloride. The coating compositions include distempers, water paints, oil paints and pigmented or unpigmented resinous or oleo-resinous varnishes, cellulose derivative lacquers and wax polishes. The benzene hexachloride may be incorporated in a pre-formed coating composition, e.g., a flat wall paint. The incorporation may be effected by dissolving the benzene hexachloride in a solvent which is the same as, or compatible with, the solvent used in the paint and then mixing the solution with the paint. Alternatively the benzene hexachloride or a solution thereof may be incorporated at any stage during the mixing tender or pigment, e.g., zinc oxide. An aqueous of the paint; or may be premixed with the exdispersion of the benzene hexachloride may be added to a preformed water paint. The compositions may be applied by brushing dipping or spraying to articles such as furniture or kitchen appliances, flexible materials such as wall paper, woven fabrics, containers such as wooden boxes and the internal surfaces of structures such as rooms &c. According to one example a paint consists of lithopone, china clay, congo gum, linseed oil varnish, white spirit, heavy naphtha and benzine hexachloride (containing 12 per cent, g -isomer). The natural resin of this example may be replaced by linseed oil-glyceryl phthalate resin. According to another example, the same benzene hexachloride (in finely divided form) is incorporated in a dispersion in water of congo gum linseed oil varnish, lithopone, paris white and animal glue.
