Abstract
Coating compositions comprise the toluene-soluble polymer of vinyl chloride described in Specification 319,588, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], together with a softener or a pigment or both of these, and a solvent. Film-forming materials may be added including natural and artificial resins, such as rosin, ester gum, cumar, Congo, Manila, and Amberol, alkyd resins, cellulose derivatives such as cellulose nitrate and ethyl cellulose, and drying oils such as linseed and China wood oils. Softeners specified are dibutyl phathlate and tricresyl phosphate. Solvents specified are acetone, solvent naphtha, and toluene. Among the examples, a paint for ship bottoms consists of the vinyl polymer, chrome orange pigment, toluene, and naphtha; a spraying enamel resistant to acid, brine and gasoline consists of the vinyl polymer, chrome orange, basic lead sulphate, sublimed blue lead, "asbestine," naphtha and toluene; and other examples specify zinc oxide and titanium oxide pigments. When using linseed oil or alkyd resins, the vinyl chloride may be polymerized in the presence of the oil or resin; for example, by heating together equal quantities of vinyl chloride and blown linseed oil. The proportions of the ingredients are illustrated by the following examples of compositions. (1) In 100 parts, about 16 parts of a toluene soluble polymer of vinyl chloride, about 19 parts of pigment, about 2 parts of a softener, and a solvent comprising toluene. (2) About 16 parts of a toluene-soluble polymer of vinyl chloride, about 19 parts of titanium oxide, about 2 parts of dibutyl phthalate, about 21 parts of Hi-flash Naphtha, about 15 parts of solvent naphtha, and about 27 parts of toluene.ALSO:An artificial resin for use in the preparation of coating compositions is prepared by polymerizing vinyl chloride in the presence of linseed oil or an alkyd resin, for example, by heating together equal quantities of vinyl chloride and blown linseed oil.
