Abstract

552,500. Coating surfaces; coating compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 8, 1941, No. 11439. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1940. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] A process for finishing a surface containing a colouring matter soluble in organic solvents, comprises applying to the said surface, for the purpose of forming an intermediate sealing coating, a composition comprising an organic film-forming vehicle and uncharged activated carbon, and thereafter applying a finishing coat. " Bleeding " or diffusion of the colouring matter into the final coating, is thereby prevented. Examples are given of intermediate sealing coatings comprising:- (1) activated carbon, tricresyl phosphate, cellulose nitrate, shellac, linseed oil, ethyl acetate, petroleum naphtha, butyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, isobutyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone; (2) activated carbon, dibutyl phthalate, damar resin, cellulose nitrate, ester gum, castor oil, ethyl acetate, petroleum naphtha, butyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, isobutyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone; (3) activated carbon, a linseed oil modified diglycerol-triphthalate resin, petroleum naphtha and cobalt and lead driers; (4) activated carbon, linseed oil and rosin; (5) activated carbon, a linseed oil modified alkyd resin, cellulose nitrate, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, petroleum naphtha, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, butyl acetate, phosphoric acid, antimony oxide and talc; (6) activated carbon, shellac, ethyl alcohol and acetone. Examples are also given of the application of these intermediate coating compositions over primers containing cellulose nitrate, alkyd resins, and " bleeding " colouring materials such as toluidine toner red and maroon toner, the intermediate coating being then covered by white compositions and containing cellulose nitrate and/or alkyd resins, and titanium dioxide. These intermediate coatings are also effective in preventing the bleeding of asphaltic or bituminous materials.
