Abstract

Coating compositions comprise a suspended admixture of transparent glass beads having an average diameter of from 3 to 10 mils, the beads being present in an amount of 3 to 8 pounds per gallon of bead-free composition. In examples the coating composition comprises: (1) a varnish base, titanium dioxide, asbestine, naphtha, and the beads, the varnish base consisting of chinawood and linseed oil, a modified phenol-aldehyde resin, oleum spirits, xylol, cobalt drier and naphtha; (2) a varnish base, titanium dioxide, mica, and the glass beads, the varnish base comprising a modified phenolic varnish resin, dehydrated castor oil, linseed oil and naphtha; (3) an aqueous emulsion of an alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, mica, water and the glass beads; and (4) a phenolic resin, a pigment mixture, congo-linseed oil, xylol, naphtha and cobalt and lead naphthenate driers and the glass beads, the pigment mixture comprising light and medium chrome yellow, leaded zinc oxide, asbestine and aluminium stearate. The beads may be surface treated, e.g. coated with an aqueous solution of salignen (or water-soluble "Astage" phenol-aldehyde resin) or with a thin layer of pigmented varnish or glaze.ALSO:A pigmented reflective highway marking paint comprises a suspended admixture of transparent glass beads having an average diameter of from 3 to 10 mils, the beads being present in an amount of 3 to 8 pounds per gallon of bead-force paint. The paints may comprise a drying oil base varnish containing a brilliantly reflective pigment, e.g. lead chromate or titanium dioxide and a false bodying agent, e.g. magnesium silicate and the pigment volume ratio may be 25 to 45 per cent. The paint may be sprayed on to the highway surfaces. The beads may be surface treated, e.g. coated with an aqueous solution of salignen (or water soluble "A stage" phenol-aldehyde resin) or with a thin layer of pigmented varnish or glaze. In an example the paint comprises pontianak resin, castor oil, methanol, butanol, asbestine, titanium dioxide and the glass beads.
