Abstract
An article is provided with a decorative finish by applying thereto a base coating in the form of a pattern, and applying a continuous overlying or protective outer coating in wet condition to the base coating while the latter is still wet, the overlying coating having a predetermined controlled incompatibility with the base coating so that it is differentially repelled therefrom while still retaining its continuous protective relation. An exemplary base coating comprises a pigment consisting of titanium dioxide, aluminium hydrate, lithopone, molybdated orange and lithol rubine mixed with a vehicle consisting of refined linseed oil, long oil alkyd resin, high boiling hydrocarbon thinners, and manganese lead and cobalt naphthenates to form a pink graining paste which was applied with a roller, and, while still wet, sprayed with a brown, synthetic enamel comprising yellow, red, black and white tinting enamels mixed with a medium to short soya bean oil resin resulting from reacting dicyclopentadiene with soya bean oil and adjusting to 70 per cent solids with mineral spirits, a condensation product of urea with formaldehyde alkylated with butanol and octyl alcohol, and naphtha. The tinting enamels comprised respectively tartrazine yellow pigment, lithol rubine, carbon black and zinc oxide in a mixture of the above dicyclopentadiene copolymer and naphtha. The dicyclopentadiene copolymer may be used as the vehicle in the pink graining paste, and the desired degree of incompatibility with the above brown enamel secured by adding a suitable amount of a silicone oil to the paste.ALSO:<PICT:0734140/III/1> An article is provided with a decorative finish by applying thereto a base coating in the form of a pattern and applying a continuous overlying or protective outer coating in wet condition to the base coating while the latter is still wet, the overlying coating having a predetermined controlled incompatibility with the base coating so that it is differentially repelled there from while still maintaining its continuous protective relation. The design of the base coating 11 is preferably of an open, discontinuous type, the overlying coating 12, which may be of a contrasting colour, being partially repelled away from the thicker portions of the design, so as to be thicker and have its surface raised in areas relatively free from the base coating. The two layers may then be set or cured simultaneously. The design layer may be applied by printing, rotogravure, or silk screen, or by painting with a brush, and the outer layer may be sprayed on, printed or roll coated. Suitable compositions for the two coatings are described (see Group IV (a)).
