Abstract

Metals, e.g. zinc and steel panels, are primed with a paint comprising as the sole or principal anticorrosive agent a precipitated calcium silicate having a molecular SiO2:CaO p ratio greater than 1:1 dispersed in a binder medium. The binder may be drying oils, combination of natural oils or their fatty acids with synthetic resins such as alkyd resins, epoxy resins, vinyl toluene treated alkyd resins and styrenated alkyd resins, polystyrene or condensation products derived from fatty acids as described in Specification 827,361. The calcium silicate may have particle size of less than 1 micron. Thinners specified are turpentine, white spirit, xylol and naphtha. Extenders mentioned are silica, magnesium silicate, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and kaolin. Driers, e.g. cobalt or manganese linoleate or naphthenate, antioxidants and zinc chromate may also be present. The Provisional Specification discloses the coating of aluminium surfaces.ALSO:A paint comprises as the sole or principal anticorrosive agent a precipitated calcium silicate having a molecular SiO2:CaO ratio greater than 1:1 dispersed in a binder medium. The binder may be drying oils, combination of natural oils or their fatty acids with synthetic resins such as alkyd resins, epoxy resins, vinyl toluene treated alkyd resins and styrenated alkyd resins, polystyrene or condensation products derived from fatty acids as described in Specification 827,361. The calcium silicate may have particle size of less than 1 micron. Thinners specified are turpentine, white spirit, xylol and naphtha.
