Abstract

1,261,329. Printing apparatus. F. S. ULRICH. 13 April, 1970, No. 17535/70. Heading B6C. Webs or sheets of, for example, paper 5 are printed on with a hydrophobic ink 6, containing a vehicle which dries by non-evaporative gellation, then a layer of water-soluble and water-containing varnish 7 is applied over the wet ink and dried by microwave heating, which expels the water from the varnish and leaves unset ink between the material printed on and a film of dry varnish 7. Sheets B may be printed on by a multi-colour lithographic press C and be coated with an aqueous solution 28 of varnish by a coating roller 27. 'The sheets B are then passed through slotted wave-guides 32-34, which are connected to a wave generator such as a magnetron or klystron. The sheets B may be held by suction to an endless belt 41 as they are passed through the wave-guides. Preferably the varnish applied is a resin varnish, made, for example, from styrene, vinyl toluene, urea formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde, with a plasticizing oil, fatty acid or polyhydric alcohol. A solubilizing agent such as carbitol and an ionic emulsifier may be included.
