[Class 140] [Also in Group XVI] In a process for transfer coating a thin film of flowable thermoplastic substance is deposited on to a movable support, passed through a solidifying chamber and then brought into contact with a sheet material to be coated at a point outside said solidifying chamber, heat and pressure being applied to adhere the film to the sheet material. The adhered film is then passed through a cooling chamber, distinct from the previous chamber, and then stripped from the movable support at a point outside the cooling chamber and spaced from the point of application of heat and pressure. The film may be formed of cellulose acetate and butyrate, nitrocellulose and ethers of cellulose, polyvinyl chloride and acetate, polyvinylidene chloride, after chlorinated polyvinyl formals, acetals and butyrals, polystyrene, coumarone and indene resins, polythylene, acrylate and methacrylate resins, various vinyl copolymers, unhardened phenol-, urea-, alkylated urea-, melamine-, and sulphonamide-aldehyde resins, alkyd resins, polyamides, polybutadiene, polychloroprene and the like, and may be applied in solution or in a molten state in any known manner uniformly or in predetermined areas. Specified materials to be coated are textiles, metals, wood veneer, leather or wall-paper. The movable surface may be an endless band or a drum or a substantially continuous surface, being made of metal, cellulose hydrate, thermosetting resins or gelatine. In Fig. 1 the sheet material 32 to be coated is preferably passed about the heated roller 20a and then between the heated pressure rollers 20 and 22, there also being passed between these rollers so as to enclose the sheet material 32, two endless bands 14 each carrying a thermoplastic film from containers 42 through the solidifying chambers 48. The material coated on both sides passes from the heated pressure rollers through the cooling chamber 50 to the rollers 38 where it is stripped from the surface 14 to give roll 52. The band 14 may have raised configurations and roller 20 may have raised areas so as to emboss the bare. sheet and film. In Fig. 2 a continuous web 14a is coated on both sides with a thermoplastic film from vessel 58, passed through a solidifying chamber 48a to heated pressure rollers 20 and 22 where the sheet materials 32a and 32b are coated, the adhered film then being passed through cooling chamber 50a to stripping rollers 38. The adhering of the film to the sheet material may, in the case of Fig. 2, take place at spaced points.
