Abstract

[Also in Divisions B2 and H1] A method of treating the surface of a substrate to improve the adherence of the surface to a subsequently applied extrusion coating of a polyolefin plastics material comprises subjecting the surface to the action of a corona discharge at a voltage of 10,000 to 25,000 volts, e.g. 10,000 to 14,000 volts, from an electrode spaced from 0À25 to 0À25 inch away from the surface, the substrate being advanced past the electrode at a speed of 200 to 600 feet per minute. The substrate may be a polyolefine, e.g. polypropylene, polystyrene, ethylenepropylene, or ethylene-butene copolymers, paper, Kraft paper or paperboard. The substrate may be in the form of a web 2 and is passed on to a support, e.g. treater roll 9, formed of electrically conductive material with one surface of the web facing the support and the surface to be treated facing outwardly towards the electrode 10, corona discharge being applied from the electrode, which may be spaced 0À03 to 0À08 inch from the surface of the substrate, upon the outwardly facing surface of the web and an extruded coating of a polyolefin thereafter being applied on to the treated surface of the web from die 15, the melt 16 being forced on to the substrate by rolls 12 and 17. The coated substrate 18 may then be trimmed by slitter roll 20 and slitters 21. The term " substrate " may be a self-supporting web or a layer or coating upon another material. The coating may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, or copolymers of ethylene or propylene with olefins such as butene, pentene and hexene, and chlorinated polyethylene. The polyolefin coated substrate is heat sealable and may be used for packaging, construction material and decorative finishes.
