Abstract

1338302 Coated regenerated cellulose film EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 3 June 1971 [4 June 1970] 18701/71 Heading B2E Coated regenerated cellulose film is produced by softening a gel-state web of regenerated cellulose with an aqueous solution of a plasticiser consisting substantially of polyethylene glycol of average molecular weight 285-4000, drying the softened web to a moisture content of 4-8 weight % in a manner such that the web is maintained in a wrinkle free condition throughout the drying operation while permitting from 2-5% shrinkage, applying a solution or dispersion of a polymer in a liquid to at least one surface of the dried web, removing the liquid and humidifying the coated web while permitting at least 0.5% longitudinal shrinkage. The coating may be a transparent coating of nitrocellulose or vinylidene chloride polymer or copolymer applied by immersion or doctor roll. The softener solution may contain up to 20% by weight of the total plasticiser of glycerin or polypropylene glycol. In the first drying zone, the film passes over a succession of heated rotating idler and driven rollers at 70-120‹C, transverse shrinkage being restrained by special finishing and accurate spacing of the rollers. The humidifying atmosphere usually has a dry bulb temperature of 80-90‹C and a wet bulb temperature of 75- 85‹C maintained by passing a heated air stream through a hot water spray and then steam.
