Abstract

471,641. Drying films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. Oct. 13, 1936, No. 27819. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1935. [Class 34 (i)] A method of, and apparatus for drying a wet non-fibrous self-supporting web or film subject to shrinkage comprises the steps of subjecting the web in a chamber and out of contact with any solid surface subsequently continuing the drying in contact with a solid surface. The invention is described in reference to sheets of regenerated cellulose but is applicable to other cellulosic and non- cellulosic materials of like character. A web 10 of non-fibrous cellulosic material suitably prepared is led through a bath 11 over rolls 12, thence between squeeze rollers 13 to a chamber 15. It is unsupported between rollers 13, 16, and is played upon by hot air or gas jets 17 arranged to extend forwardly as shown. The jets are arranged in multiple units, and are so spaced that there is sufficient passage for secondary air to reach the flames and for products of combustion to escape, assisted by suitable fans 32 &c. The web passes to heated drying rollers 40 and is collected on a winder 60. The web may be drawn through the apparatus by imparting rotation to some or all of the rolls, which may be regulated to allow for shrinkage. The water content of the web may originally be more than 300 per cent to be reduced to 10 per cent. Specification 471,640 is referred to.
