Abstract

470,777. Sizing paper. KODAK, Ltd. Feb. 20, 1936, No. 5209. Convention date, March 12, 1935. [Classes 96 and 140] In sizing paper, air is removed from the paper web by means of steam and the web is submerged in size before air can re-enter it. Preferably, the steam moves in counter-current to the web. A paper web P passes from draining rolls 11 over a roller 10 carried by brackets fixed to the top of a steam chest 4 through which it passes into a sizing bath 1 wherein it is guided by rolls 12, 13 and from which it emerges between squeezing rolls 14, 15 and passes over drying rolls 16. The steam chest 4 consists of two parts 17, 18 bolted together at 20 and provided with an insulating covering 64. The paper web passes through an adjustable inlet 35 into a passageway in the steam chest comprising two diverging walls 24, 25. Steam, introduced by pipes 5, 6, is deflected by baffles 42 carried on brackets 40. Condensed steam is removed by drains 32, 33. Air is prevented from re-entering the paper after the steam treatment by a flange 46 which projects downwards from the steam chest into the size.
