Abstract
Animal glue in the form of continuous sheet which is free from blisters and holes is obtained by forming a layer of aqueous glue liquor on a rotating internally-heated metal drum, and directing radiant heat on to the outer surface of the layer which, when a large proportion of the water has been evaporated, is scraped off the drum in the form of a sheet. Heating steam at about 230 DEG F. is supplied to drum 10 through ports in hollow shaft 11. A pool of the aqueous liquor, containing about 40 per cent solids, is maintained in vessel 13; and this liquor is applied by roller 14 to the drum where it is formed into a continuous layer by compressed air discharged from pipe 15, and by baffle 16. <PICT:0780623/III/1> <PICT:0780623/III/2> Blowers 18 direct a heavy stream of air against the layer on the ascending side of the drum. The air and evaporated water are discharged through hood 19. A battery of infra-red lamps 21 are mounted adjacent to the descending side of the drum; these keep the outer surface of the glue sheet at 170 DEG F. and soft enough to allow the escape of small bubbles of vapour. When the water-content of the sheet has been reduced to about 22 per cent, it is scraped off by doctor knife 22, which may be heated, while the opposite side of the sheet is cooled by a stream of cool air from perforated pipe 23. The sheet is passed between brine-cooled calendar rolls 24 and 25; it adheres to roll 24 from which it is removed by knife 26. The sheet is then conveyed to an air dryer within which it is reduced to its final moisture content. Specification 707,412 is referred to.
