Abstract

1374965 Paper DEXTER CORP 22 May 1973 [22 May 1972] 24257/73 Heading D2B [Also in Division F4] A wet fibrous highly porous web is placed in intimate, full surface contact with a permeable support and held in position for passing drying gas therethrough to dry the web to stabilization whereupon the restrainment is removed, the web having a densometer value of less than lsu/100 ml measured by TAPPI test method T460 or -68. The web is base stock material e.g. stencil tissue, paper webs for casing, tape, &c., and comprises long unhydrated natural fibres from a highly dilute aqueous suspension or dispersion formed into a lightweight web on a papermaking machine e.g. an inclined wire type. The fibres are vegetable and of the Musa family e.g. abaca or Manila hemp 4 to 7mm long, cylindrical and less than 30 microns in diam. These may have added thereto, or be replaced by other naturral fibres e.g. jute, caroa, sisal, various wood pulps such as bleached or unbleached kraft, or synthetic fibres e.g. rayon, nylon, polyesters, vinyl copolymers &c. After dispersion, the web is at least 65% of water by weight. Drying is carried out using a foraminous carrier and a continuous flow of gas at preferably 200 to 450‹F forcing the web onto the carrier and passing through the web. Preferably a vacuum may exist under the carrier to aid web restraint. The drying may also be used for rewet webs having 50% of water by weight. After drying, the web is stabilized at 8% of water by weight, or less, and is coated after passing through guide rolls, e.g. by roller coating, fountain coating, or spray coating, a reverse coating roll and bar succeeding the coating operation to remove excess. The web is passed through a tunnel oven and is dried in a stream of hot air.
