Abstract

1426694 Paper-making SCOTT PAPER CO 2 April 1974 14643/74 Headings D2A and D2B [Also in Division G1] A method of making a soft absorbent creped paper web of uniform density comprises forming a web of principally lignocellulosic fibres by deposition of an aqueous slurry of the fibres on a foraminous surface, removing water from the web, the water being removed without subjecting the web to a pressure of more than 5 psi until it is at least 80% dry, whereby the fibres are bonded together substantially by papermaking bonds, and thereafter creping the web. As shown stock, which may include small amounts of non-lignocellulosic fibres such as cotton, wool or rayon, is deposited from a distribution means 10 onto a foudrinier wire 16 passing over a breast roll 17, table rolls 18, driven rolls 20 and guide rolls 21-23. The web is then transferred onto a drying fabric 24 at a pick up roll 25, transfer being assisted by a jet of steam or air from a header 26. The web is carried on fabric 24 through a drier 27, e.g. radiant heat lamps, a tunnel drier or a transpiration drier, and is subsequently transferred by a roll 31 to a creping drum 32, e.g. a Yankee drier. A creping adhesive may be applied, by a sprayer 37 or roller, to the web surface or the surface of the drum 32 particularly if the web is 90% or more dry. The adhesive may reduce the web dryness by 10-20%. The web is preferably dried by the drum 32 to 95% or more then creped by a blade 38 which also removes the web from the drum. Examples of the method are described using a pulp consisting of 80% kraft softwood and 20% kraft hardwood to form webs dried to 95% and 98% before being subjected to substantial compression. The resulting webs have a density under no load of less than 0.3 gm/cm<SP>3</SP> and a tensile energy absorption/stiffness ratio greater than 0.5 Î 10<SP>-4</SP> for a dry basis weight of between 10 and 30 1bs/2880 sq. ft.
