Abstract

903,508. Extensible creped paper. CROWN ZELLERBACH CORPORATION. June 7, 1960 [June 29, 1959], No. 19998/60. Class 96. In making extensible creped and, if desired, embossed paper having a creped texture on one side extending throughout its thickness and a smooth surface on the other side, a partially dried web of paper 14 such as tissue and towel paper, e.g. containing between 20 and 60% of moisture, is passed through the nip between a hard roll 10 made of granite, artificial stone or steel and a roll 11 with an elastic covering of natural or synthetic rubber having a Shore durometer hardness between 10 and 45 degrees. The rolls are rotated so that the peripheral speed of the roll 10 exceeds that of the roll 11 by at least 8%. The surface of the roll 11 stretches, as it approaches the centre of the nip, and then contracts and moves against the direction of travel of the paper, when the centre is passed, thus accomplishing creping of the paper, e.g. within a distance of half an inch in the direction of travel. The roll 11 may comprise a rigid hollow shell and a covering of rubber. The shell and covering may be pierced by perforations 15 and a suction-box 18 may be fitted inside the shell opposite the nip. The surface of the roll 10 may be provided with an embossing pattern, e.g. circumferential ribs.
