In producing coated paper, e.g. cast-coated paper, the coated side of a wet coated paper web is pressed against a rigid moving surface, e.g. that of a drum, by means of a layer that is relatively non-stretching in comparison with a soft, resilient backing member through which the pressure is applied. The relatively non- stretching layer e.g. of hard, tensile-reinforced rubber, may form the outer surface of a pressure roller having an under-surface of soft, elastic material surmounting a rigid core, or may comprise an endless belt interposed between a resiliently surfaced pressure roller and the rigid drum.
