473,300. Embossed tissue paper. BURGESS, A. F. (International Cellucotton Products Co.) April 9, 1936, No. 10504. [Class 96] [Also in Group XVI] A paper article soft enough to be suitable for use on the face consists of a crÛped tissue paper sheet on which is formed an all-over pattern by embossing accompanied by stretching, the pattern being not materially coarser than the crÛpeing and comprising a multiplicity of elements separated by interposed areas of sheet which remain in their initial condition. A web of tissue paper is dried on a drying roller and removed by a doctor blade which crÛpes it transversely. Two rolls 15 of this crÛped tissue are unwound and the superposed tissues passed between pairs of calendar rolls 16 which crush some of the striations of the crÛpeing and effect a stretching of the multiple web, which is then fed between a hard embossing roll 17 and a platen roll 18 with a soft resilient covering 19. A suitable pattern shown in Fig. 7 consists of a multiplicity of small, rounded, oblong projections, spaced from each other a distance less than their width. There may e.g. be 30 lines of embossing/inch in one direction and 24/inch in the other. Preferably the pattern interrupts all the lines 14 of the crepeing. Since the sheets are gripped during embossing over a wide zone the embossing is accompanied by stretching of the sheet material.
