[Also in Group XVI] A rotary perforating, creasing or slitting machine of the type in which sheets of paper are fed individually between a pair of rolls, one with spaced cutting or creasing discs and the other with pairs of plain discs for each cutting or creasing disc, and resilient rings on one roll to nip the sheets against the other roll, is provided with two oppositely facing deflectors bearing transversely on the sheet to be fed and disposed one before the other in advance of the roll nip, the deflector nearer the nip projecting beyond the plane extending from the operative edge of the other deflector to the nip. As shown in Fig. 2, a sheet 7 is deflected by a metal straight-edge 10 fitted to the upper surface of a board 11 positioned slightly above the horizontal plane through the nip formed by rolls 3 and 4 and then by a bar 12 having a bevelled surface 13. The downward deflection of the sheet 7 from the board 11 and then the reverse deflection caused by the surface 13 counteract the tendency for the sheet to buckle. The rolls 3, 4 carry ring cutters 5, 6, the faces of which overlap to slit the sheet 7. Creasing rolls 15, 16, mounted on shafts 1, 2 carrying the cutters 5, 6, have creasing ribs 17 and grooves 18. Perforating rolls 19, 20 having a perforating disc 21 engaging discs 22 are mounted on the shafts 1, 2. The rolls 3, 15, 19 each have one or more rubber rings 9 engaging plain cylindrical surfaces on the cooperating rolls 4, 16 and 20 for frictionally feeding the sheets. A stripper on the roll 19 frees the sheet 7 from the disc 21 after perforation and a clearer between the discs 22 removes punchings from the disc 21. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the second deflector is in the form of a roller.
