Abstract

1515349 Folding sheet material KAWANOE ZOKI KK 21 July 1975 30488/75 Heading B8R Apparatus for cutting two webs into sheets and folding pairs of sheets, one from each web, into interleaved relationship in a zig-zag stack 23, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises knives 7, 8 for slitting the webs 21, 22 longitudinally, suction folding rollers 14, 15 for folding the sheets, and rollers 11, 12 each having a plurality of knives 13 out of phase with each other for cutting the webs into sheets. The roller 14 is provided with a plurality of circumferential grooves A, Fig. 2, interrupted by lands B, a plurality of apertures 48, 49 connected to a weak suction source and arranged in rows passing through the lands B, and a plurality of apertures 50, 51 connected to a strong suction source and arranged in rows passing through the grooves A, there being as many sets of apertures 48, 49 and 50, 51 and lands B as there are knives on the roller 11, e.g. three. The roller 15 is similarly constructed, but its apertures 48<SP>1</SP>, 491 and 50<SP>1</SP>, 511 and lands B are out of phase with those on the roller 14. In operation, the web 21 is cut by a knife 13 on the roller 11 co-operating with lands B on the roller 14, and the cut sheet is carried on the roller 14 by means of the suction in the apertures 48, 49 to the position of contact with the roller 15, at which the suction in the apertures 48, 49 is released and the sheet is pulled on to the surface of the roll 15 by the suction in the apertures 50<SP>1</SP>, 51<SP>1</SP>, the leading edge of the sheet being in contact with the middle of a sheet previously cut from the web 22 by the knives on the roller 12, the two sheets being carried together to a point where pivoted bars 17 movable into and out of the grooves A strips the pair of sheets from the roller 15 and deposits them in an interleaved and folded condition on the stack 23. The procedure is then repeated with the rollers 12, 15, 14 and a second bar 16.
