Abstract

1,106,661. Sheet or web folding apparatus. KIMBERLY-CLARK CORPORATION. 24 May, 1965 [1 June, 1964], No. 21939/65. Heading B6H. A machine for interfolding facial tissue web material to produce a continuous stack of webs, comprises a frame 30, supporting rotatably a plurality of arbors 39 . . . 44, which carry a corresponding plurality of web rolls 33 . . . 38 from which the webs A . . . F are drivingly advanced into co-operation with relevant rollers 69, 70 . . . 55, 56 and drawn over relevant underfolding plates 79 . . . 83 to produce said interleaved webs. The interleaved webs A . . . F are finally fed between 57, 59 to an over-folding plate 84 which interleaves the stack of webs A . . . F with an oncoming stack 85 of interleaved webs advanced on a conveyer 90. In operation web A is fed over roller 69 and then superposed in staggered relationship on the web B whilst both webs pass over the roller 70. The webs are then passed on to a first under-folding plate 79 in said spaced relationship as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the webs are deflecked by a first transverse edge 95 to follow a path extending in the direction of roller 71 and a second edge 99 in conjunction with a third edge 102 impart a longitudinal fold to the web B which overlaps one half of the web width A with web portions b 1 , b 2 , the interfolded webs then passing along a fourth edge 100. Successive webs C, D, E, F are superposed on and interleaved with the preceding interleaved webs by means of their associated underfolding plates 80, 81, 82, 83. The interleaved stack of webs A . . . F is then interleaved with the oncoming stack 85 by means of the overfolding plate 84 illustrated in detail in Figs. 7-9 (not shown). In other embodiments; Figs. 12, 13 and 14 (not shown) the last one of the underfolding plates is replaced by-an additional over-folding plate and the sequence of inter-folding of the webs is modified. A plurality of such machines may be used to inter-fold any selected number of webs of facial tissues.
