Abstract

1,255,520. Rotary intaglio machines. AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. 20 Nov., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 56754/69. Heading B6C. In a web-fed rotary intaglio machine in which the plate cylinder 33 is twice the diameter of the impression cylinder 32 and carries two intaglio plates 34, the web, which is perforated along its edges, is intermittently fed between the printing couple although the latter is continuously rotated. In order to obtain accurate registration the web is fed to the couple by a sprocket cylinder 44 downstream thereof which pulls through the couple an overlength of web. This action is against a suction cylinder which is rotated against the direction of movement of the web and is located upstream of the web. Through the operation of this cylinder any overfeed is pulled back through the couple during the period that the surfaces of the couple are unengaged. At this time the sprocket cylinder is stationary and the web at that position is anchored by the sprockets engaging the web perforations. The drive means to the plate cylinder is interconnected to the drive means to the sprocket cylinder and the suction cylinder and the drive control box 48 ensures that the sprocket cylinder is stopped and started at the proper times. As shown in Fig. 3, some of the stack in the web downstream of the couple is taken up by an air jet device. In another embodiment, the sprocket cylinder is replaced by endless belts at each edge of the web whilst in a further device the sprocket cylinder is upstream of the couple and is reversed to withdraw the overfeed.
