Abstract

797,928. Folding apparatus. AMERICAN LAUNDRY MACHINERY CO. Dec. 29, 1955 [Jan. 5, 1955], No. 37326/55. Class 42 (2). A folding apparatus in which a longitudinal fold is performed by advancing a limp flat article along horizontal forming means with its lateral edge portions depending adjacent the outer lateral edges of the forming means and wherein a turning wing is disposed in co-operating relationship adjacent one outer lateral edge of the forming means for contacting and turning inwardly one depending edge portion around the adjacent outer edge of the forming means to thereby effect a longitudinal fold along the adjacent outer edge is further provided with means for adapting it to the folding of articles of different widths, comprising means for varying the width of the forming means and for simultaneously adjusting the position of the turning wing whereby to maintain it in effective operating position with respect to the forming means. In the embodiment shown the apparatus is combined with a stacking means which is also adjustable so as to receive articles of different widths. The articles 21 to be folded are fed through the machine on conveying belts and the former or folding plate 40 is split longitudinally into two portions 40a and 40b and these two portions can be moved apart thus varying the effective width of the folding plate. The left-hand turning plate or wing 53 (looking in the direction of passage of the article through the apparatus) is fixed and is so arranged to fully support articles of the maximum and minimum possible widths. On the other hand, the right-hand turning plate or wing 52 is movable laterally so as to compensate for the variations in width of the folding plate 40. The stacking section of the apparatus has two guide strips for guiding the articles to the stacking mechanism the outlet width between these strips being also adjustable in relationship to the width of the folding plate 40. The stack guides 150 are resiliently mounted on standards 153 by springs 155 on studs or screws 152, and connected to the guide bars 150 are plates 149 the bottom edges of which are adjustable so as to vary the distance therebetween, again, in relation to the width of the folding plate 40. The various width setting adjustments are brought about from one control handle operating through a shaft 83 and various parallel motion linkages to effect the width adjustments. Specification 661,570 is referred to.
