A machine for folding serviettes, handkerchiefs and like articles comprises a table 2 upon which the article 6 is placed in flat condition, primary folding bars or members 4 which are adapted to move in a vertical plane and effect a primary folding by guiding the article through an elongated opening 3 in the table and co-act with a normally stationary, but adjustable, vertical folding bar or member 5 to fold the article and locate it between aligned movable secondary folding members or blades 10 and a normally stationary but adjustable secondary folding member or blade 11, the secondary folding members being disposed in a vertical plane at right angles to that of the primary folding members. After the secondary folding, pressure rollers 14 are moved automatically to protrude through slots 48 in the walls 49, engage the folded article and feed it through an ejection . slot or to a conveyer which delivers it to one side of the machine. The rollers 14, and auxiliary rollers 50 are preferably rotated continuously. The bar 5 and each of the bars 4 consists of two parts separated by a gap, to allow the bars 10 and article 6 to pass therethrough. The movements of the folding bars 4 and 10 and of the members carrying the'rollers 14 are caused by cams on a shaft 16, acting through linkages on the said members to cause a complete cycle of operations for each rotation of the shaft 16 ; the latter is driven from a shaft 80 through a clutch 83 controlled by a pedal 88, mechanism associated with the shaft 16 preventing the clutch from being disengaged until a revolution of the shaft 16 has been completed. The positions of the adjustable primary and secondary folding blades 5 and 11 are controlled by an external hand lever or wheel on a shaft 62, which acts through linkages on these members, and on width-indicating guides 60 slidable over the table 2.
