In a machine in which a composite wrapper, comprising overlapping portions of different lengths, is folded around an article such as a batch of cigarettes, a web W 1 is fed from a roll 40 by driven roller 1, 2 and passes downwardly between guides 42, 43 and 28, 29, and a second web W 2 is simultaneously fed from a roll 41 by slower, driven rollers 3, 4 and passes over a roller 5 and guide 44 into alignment with the web W 1 When the leading end of the latter has reached a stop 45, the two webs are severed simultaneously by cam-operated shears 6, 7 to form two strips of unequal lengths having their trailing edges coincident. The shorter strip is then held by a suction device 17 while the longer strip is engaged by an article W 3 which is moved forwardly by a pusher 24 on an endless chain 25. The article carries the strip into a folding channel defined by a table 16 and an endless belt 9 passing under a plate 13 and around rollers 8, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15, thus causing the strip to be folded in the form of a U and its upper end to be moved downwardly relative to the stationary shorter strip. When the required overlap between the strips has been produced, the device 17 releases its grip and an endless belt 46 driven at the same speed as the chain 25 is moved to the left. The two strips are thus gripped between the two belts and a drive is transmitted to the belt 9 so that the overlap is maintained while the folding of the wrapper to U-shape is completed. The belt 46 passes around collars 18, 19 and 47 carried by a parallelogram linkage 20-22 actuated by a cam 27. A wedge 48 deflects the leading end of the shorter strip to ensure that it passes between the article and the belt 9.
