Abstract

652,834. Wrapping - machines. CAMPBELL, S. J. Nov. 5, 1948, No. 28812. [Class 94(i) [Also in Group XVI] Mechanism for laterally spacing parallel and coplanar strips of material cut longitudinally from a common web while maintaining the relative longitudinal positions of portions which were contiguous in the web includes a first spreader member over which said strips pass to change laterally their direction of movement, and a second spreader member positioned in the path of the strips leaving said first spreader member and over which second member said strips pass with a lateral change of direction which restores parellelism and coplanarity to the respective strips. As applied to a wrapping machine, wrapping- strips 70, 71, 72, 73 are cut longitudinally from a web fed from a roll 55 past a'light source 57 and photo-electric cell 58 which synchronizes the movement of the web and articles 40. The web is slit longitudinally by knives 60 and the individual strips 70-73 pass over a spreader member 62 having inclined rounded guiding surfaces 65 and 66 and rounded guiding surfaces 67 and 68 which deviate at greater angles than the former surfaces from a line normal to the vertical plane through which the longitudinal machine axis passes. A spreader member 63 mounted above the member 62 is provided with surfaces 75, 76, 77, 78 similar to and offset outwardly of the surfaces 65, 68. In passing over the member 62 the strips are caused to move angularly outwardly away from each other, but in passing over the second member 63 they will be restored to parallelism and coplanarity and will be spaced from each other far enough apart to permit them to be manipulated individually with respect to the articles. The articles 40 to be wrapped are supplied by a belt 38 on to converging shoots 39 and are fed forwardly by fingers 43 depending from an overhead conveyer (not shown). The wrapping-strips 70, 71, 72 and 73 are fed over a roll 79 upon which glue-rolls 80 apply glue to the margins of the strips, past the ends of the shoots to receive the articles 40, the entubing of the articles being completed between conveyer belts 84 and 85 and folding-blades (not shown) after which the strips are severed transversely between the entubed articles. In a modification the strips may be spaced apart by passage over spreader members comprising pulleys. Specification 652,833 is referred to.
