Class 73 [Also in Group XVI] In a labelling machine labels are extracted from a magazine by a gummed pick-up member, comprising a drum with an interrupted surface, and are transferred, by means operable through the interrupted surface to push a label by an ungummed part on to a cylindrical suction delivery member for transfer to a labelling station. A gap is provided between the pick-up and delivery members to avoid gum transfer. A pick-up drum 8, Fig. 2, comprises concentrically-mounted flanged discs between which run belts 16 passing over end pulleys 14, 15. The drum 8 is gummed by a roller 18 and - extracts labels from reciprocating magazines 21, 22 and rotates in the opposite : sense to a suction delivery cylinder 12 so that the belts 16 force the label off the drum 8 into contact with the cylinder 12 which is spaced therefrom. The label face contacting the cylinder 12 is ungummed and the belts 16 contact strips also ungummed owing to the interrupted surface of the dum 8. The labels are applied by resilient material 23 on the cylinder 12 to articles 28 fed in timed relation between it and a presser member 29. Modified transfer means, Fig. 1, comprise belts 3 running in grooves 2 in the face of a pickup cylinder 1 and passing over a pulley 4 close to a delivery cylinder 5. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 4, label stacks 30 are provided in a drum 31 and labels are extracted and held over apertures 33 of a pick-up drum 32 behind which are suction pushers 34 which push the labels off the drum 32 on to a delivery drum 37 at the appropriate point. The speeds of all the parts are :synchronized .and the delivery member may be adapted to apply more than one label to an article and may be supplied with different labels for successive articles. 'The Provisional Specification states that the articles may be rotated by a drum or endless band to effect the application of the label. Air blasts on to the edges of the labels or a wiper member may assist com pletion of the label application. The delivery member may be provided with an additional pivoted area to allow application of a neck label to a bottle. Specification 624,246 is referred to.
