Abstract

236,019. Bevan, C. May 24, 1924. Labelling.-In a machine for attaching labels &c. to canisters &c. of the kind in which a cylinder or cylinders communicate with an air pump or the equivalent and have associated means for supplying adhesive, the labels carried round the cylinders are subjected to alternate suction and pressure to transfer the labels to and from the cylinders and to the cannisters. A label from a pack 10 is drawn against the cylinder 13 by suction through holes 14 and is carried round the cylinder until the two rows of holes in cylinders 13, 23 meet, when the label is transferred to the second cylinder 23. As the label is carried round by the second cylinder a gumming-roller 34 is lifted into contact with it by an air cylinder 31 in which a vacuum is created through a passage 32 registering with a curved port 29 in a non-rotatable cover. As the end of the label is reached, the gumming-roller is pushed away by a cam 38. In the meantime, the label is carried to a canister 40, which has been fed by a device 46, and the label is pressed into contact with the canister by revolving between the two cylinders 23, 41. An air port in the cylinder 23 is also open to admit a blast of air to the row of holes to act as a brush on the leading edge of the label. As soon as the canister is labelled the cylinder 41 is moved away by a cam 43 acting against a roller 44 and the canister falls to a shoot 50.
