Abstract
814,529. Labelling machines. ROSE BROS (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. Nov. 22, 1956 [Sept. 2, 1955], No. 25238/55. Class 73 Articles such as bottles 29 are labelled by a machine comprising a label carrier 11 rotating about a horizontal axis and arranged above a conveyer 28 upon which the bottles lie in a horizontal position, the carrier being arranged to receive labels in succession from a magazine 18, and the labels which are made adhesive at 27 being applied to the bottles by rotating the latter whilst still on the conveyer; the conveyer is moved in time relationship with the label carrier. In the construction shown the bottles 29 in shoot 52 are fed by a rotatable member 53 to cradles 33 fitted to the conveyer 28. The conveyer is driven intermittently to bring each bottle in turn to a rest position beneath the continuously rotating label carrier 24. Beneath the bottle, at this position, is a roller 37 which is driven by a chain 46 from a shaft 45 and which is carried by a pivotally mounted arm 41 actuated by a cam 44 on the shaft 45. The timing of the mechanism is such that when a label 17 on the carrier 11 reaches the applying position the cam 44 raises the roller 37 to bring the bottle into contact with the label, whereby the bottle, in contact with moving label and roller, is rotated to effect transfer of the label to the bottle. The transfer is assisted by a pressure roller 38 on an arm 39 and by rollers 36 on each cradle 33, and to enable the rollers 36 to remain in contact with the bottle when the latter is lifted portions 48 of the guides 47 of the chain conveyer 28 are slidably mounted on plungers 49 and are urged upwardly by springs 51. The labels from a stack 18 are fed to the carrier through rollers 16 by a pivoted suction nozzle 19, and are held on the carrier partly by suction and partly by a cam-operated gripper 21 which holds the leading edge of the label. Before reaching the applying station each label is gummed at 27, or is rendered adhesive by heating, and at the applying station the suction is cut off and air under pressure is applied to assist the transfer.
