Abstract

798,800. Labelling machines. FAIREST, Ltd., M. March 25, 1957 [March 23, 1956], No. 9070/56. Class 73 In a labelling machine a rotary member 15 has spaced driving projections 14 to propel upright bottles and a labelling head 16 carrying opposite each projection a pivoted suction pad 87 supplied with a gummed label which cam action causes the pad to apply to the neck of each bottle; also a vertical slider 103 with two arcuate pressers 106 A and B on vertical pivots is normally held above each pad 87 and is cam operated to descend for the pressers to press on the extreme ends of the neck label it has been wiped on by a stationary wiper. As illustrated the invention is applied to the labelling machine described in Specification 746,506 and therefore it applies body as well as neck labels. The pivoted pads 87 and corresponding fixed suction pads 76 for the body labels are carried on bars 25 depending from arms 45. Each arm 45 is pivoted to the head 16 and can be moved relatively to it by a cam 71 (Fig. 4, not shown) operating through an intermediate bell-crank lever 67 against a spring 66 (Fig. 4, not shown). The labels 29 and 30 from magazines 26 and 27 are picked up and gummed on an intermittently rotatable pick-up box 24 from which they are transferred to the suction pads 87 and 76 by rotary bars 23. During this process the pad 87 is pivoted back to lie in the same plane as the pad 76 and the arm 45 to temporarily advance the bar 25 for both pads to meet the labels. The arm then withdraws the pads whilst the projection 14 acquires a bottle 12 which has been suitably located on a conveyer 11 by a worm 13. The pads are then advanced again by cam action and the pad 84 (Fig. 5, not shown) pivoted forward to conform with the slope of the bottle necK, whilst the centre of the gummed labels are applied to the neck and body of the bottles. The labels are wiped on by stationary brushes 127 and 128 and the pivoted arcuate pressers 106A and B descend and are caused by cam action to press the ends of the neck label round the back of the bottle. The slide 103 also carries a resilient press pad 104 (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) which descends on to the top of the bottle and clamps it down to steady it. To avoid dragging the neck label off when they are withdrawn, the arcuate pressers are so pivoted that the resilient presser pads 107A and B (Figs. 8 to 10, not shown) on them move outside a tangent circle imagined to enclose the neck and touching it at the same point as each pad. The pressers then withdraw, the slide 103 ascends and the labelled bottle is delivered to a rotary table 19 and conveyer 20. The suction for the pads 76 and 87 is conveyed from a vacuum pump (not shown) via arcuate ports 60 and 61 with which eight ports 58 connected by tubes 59 to the bars 25 register successively. A hand wheel 55 enables the height of the head 16 to be adjusted for different sizes of bottle. Two microswitches 137 and 138 control the label stacks 26 and 27 to prevent labels being supplied in the event of a gap in the succession of bottles on the conveyer. Specification 773,335 also is referred to.
