Abstract

746,506. Labelling machines. BANKS, S. E. Aug. 30, 1954 [Sept. 16, 1953], No. 25548/53. Class 73. In a labelling machine, labels are fed from reciprocating label stacks 29, 29A, Figs. 2, 3, to an intermittently rotated multi-sided pick-up box 24, the sides of which have vertical apertures 25 and are previously gummed by a gumming device 26. A continuously rotatable transfer member 21 is provided with vertical depending transfer bars 23 which move into and out of the pick-up box 24 through the apertures 25 during its periods of rest to remove a label 28 covering an aperture 25 and, while retaining it by suction, to bring the label into the circular orbit of vertical labelling bars 51, 51A, Fig. 7, to which the labels are transferred by suction: the labelling bars, pivotally mounted on a continuously rotating bottle-driving member 16 then bring the labels into contact with bottles 12 engaged by projections 14 also mounted on the member 16, the labels being subsequently wiped on to the bottles by flaps, rollers or, as shown, brushes 73, 73A. The projections 14 remove the bottles 12 from the conveyer 11 on to a dead plate 17 surrounded by a guide rail 18 and after labelling, the bottles pass to a rotary discharge table 19 and then return to the conveyer 11 by a further conveyer 20. As shown the pick-up box 24, the transfer bars 23 and the labelling bars 51, 51A are designed to take both body and neck labels. Each projection 14 consists of a V-jaw 45 and labelling arms 47, 47A are pivotally mounted on the rotary member 16 in advance of each projection 14, these arms carrying respectively the labelling bars 51, 51A. Bell crank levers 66 pivoted on the member 16 each carries a follower roller 67 bearing on a stationary cam 68 and bears on a roller 69 on the upper side of an arm 47A. Springs 70, 71 urge the roller 69 against the lever 66 and the roller 67 against the cam 68. The transfer bars 23 move faster than do the labelling bars 51, 51A and thus overtake the latter to effect transfer of the labels. The cam 68 rocks the levers 47, 47A away from the bars 23 and when a bottle 12 has passed between the levers and a driving projection 14, the cam 68 permits the levers to move towards the bottle to bring the labels into contact therewith. Detector switches 96, Fig. 2, ensure that in the absence of a bottle on the conveyer, the label stacks are prevented from advancing to the pick-up box 24.
